How to Change a Ceiling Recessed Light

Recessed lights are a great way to add light to a room without taking up any floor space. They're also a relatively easy DIY project to tackle. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to change a ceiling recessed light:

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

Before you start working on the light, turn off the power to the circuit that it's on. This is important for safety reasons.

Step 2: Remove the Trim

The trim is the decorative ring that surrounds the light. It's usually held in place by a few screws. Remove the screws and carefully pull the trim away from the ceiling.

Step 3: Disconnect the Wires

Once the trim is removed, you'll see the wires that are connected to the light. Disconnect the wires by loosening the wire nuts. Be careful not to touch the bare wires with your hands.

Step 4: Remove the Light

The light is usually held in place by a few spring clips. Push the clips inward and pull the light down out of the hole.

Step 5: Install the New Light

Align the new light with the hole in the ceiling and push it up into place. The spring clips will snap into place to hold the light in place.

Step 6: Connect the Wires

Connect the wires to the new light by tightening the wire nuts. Be sure to twist the wires together before tightening the wire nuts.

Step 7: Replace the Trim

Replace the trim by snapping it back into place around the light. Tighten the screws to hold the trim in place.

Step 8: Turn On the Power

Turn on the power to the circuit and test the light to make sure it's working properly.

Tips:

  • If you're not comfortable working with electricity, it's best to hire a qualified electrician to change the light for you.
  • Make sure that the new light is the same wattage as the old light.
  • If the old light is flickering or not working properly, it may be due to a loose connection. Tighten the wire nuts and see if that solves the problem.
  • If you're replacing a light in a bathroom, make sure that the new light is rated for wet locations.
