How to Wire a Ceiling Light Fixture

Installing a ceiling light fixture is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few hours. With a few basic tools and materials, you can easily add new lighting to any room in your home.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

  • Ceiling light fixture
  • Electrical wire
  • Wire strippers
  • Electrical tape
  • Screwdriver
  • Drill
  • Safety glasses

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Turn Off the Power

Before you begin working on the light fixture, turn off the power to the circuit that it will be on. You can do this at the circuit breaker panel or fuse box.

2. Remove the Old Fixture

If you are replacing an old light fixture, remove it by unscrewing the mounting screws and disconnecting the wires.

3. Install the New Fixture

Place the new light fixture into the ceiling box and screw in the mounting screws.

4. Connect the Wires

Connect the wires from the light fixture to the wires in the ceiling box. The black wire from the light fixture should be connected to the black wire in the ceiling box, and the white wire from the light fixture should be connected to the white wire in the ceiling box. The ground wire (which is usually green or bare copper) should be connected to the ground wire in the ceiling box.

5. Secure the Wires

Twist the ends of the wires together and secure them with electrical tape.

6. Install the Light Bulb

Install the light bulb into the light fixture.

7. Turn on the Power

Turn on the power to the circuit and test the light fixture to make sure it is working properly.
