Start capacitors are connected to the motor's starting winding and provide a high voltage boost to help the motor start up.

The size and value of the capacitor used in a ceiling fan will depend on the size and power of the motor. A larger motor will require a larger capacitor. The value of the capacitor is measured in microfarads (µF). The higher the microfarad rating, the greater the capacitance of the capacitor.

If a ceiling fan's capacitor fails, it can cause the motor to run inefficiently or even fail to start. If you suspect that your ceiling fan's capacitor may be faulty, you can check it with a multimeter. A faulty capacitor will typically have a low capacitance reading or no capacitance reading at all.

Replacing a ceiling fan capacitor is a relatively simple task that can be performed by most do-it-yourselfers. However, it's important to disconnect the power to the fan before starting any work. Once the power is disconnected, you can remove the fan's motor housing and access the capacitor. The capacitor is typically connected to the motor's terminals with two wires. Simply disconnect the wires and replace the capacitor with a new one of the same type and value.

Once the new capacitor is installed, you can reconnect the wires and the motor housing and restore power to the fan. The fan should now be operating properly again.
